I recite The Lord’s Prayer almost daily but rarely do I stop and consider the words. I thought it might make for a fun exercise so let’s do it!
Our Father, who art in Heaven,
— that’s a long way to say “God”
Hallowed be thy name.
— that’s just respecting who we’re addressing as sacred and holy.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
— this is kind of a hard one but I think it means God has a kingdom and a will for us in heaven and we’re to open the door to his kingdom in our heart and follow his will down here as well.
Give us this day our daily bread,
— sustain our physical bodies
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
— forgive us for being shitty to people and the harder one of forgiving others for treating us like crap. What’s interesting about how this is worded is that it implies we’re always forgiving others. Are we? We should be if we’re not.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
— idk why you’d lead us into temptation in the first place but in case you’re not clear we’re asking you not to. If you still feel the need to lead us there, we are then asking if you don’t mind getting us the hell out.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory. Forever and ever.
— at the beginning we acknowledge that you’re sacred and holy and now we’re basically saying that we wouldn’t be praying to you if we didn’t believe you’re the absolute supreme ruler of all now and forevermore.
Amen
— thank you.
